First Commercial Truck Sold in 1899

Did You Know!

Trucking began in the late 19th century, with the first motorized trucks appearing around 1899, and the industry expanded significantly in the early 20th century.

Early Beginnings

The trucking industry emerged as a response to the limitations of railroads and horse-drawn vehicles for freight transport. Before 1900, most freight was moved by trains, which could only deliver goods to urban centers, requiring horse-drawn wagons for further distribution. The first practical trailer truck was developed in 1899 by the Winton Motor Carriage Company, which converted a car into a tractor and attached a small trailer to move goods from its factory.

In 1899, Autocar sold the first commercial truck in the U.S., capable of carrying 700 pounds.

Around 1908–1910, companies like Fruehauf experimented with tractor-trailers, laying the groundwork for modern trucking.
