How Cheap Is Rice…While on the road? Let’s Find Out!
As a Navy Vet, I was stationed in Sasebo, Japan, MA2. It wasn’t long before I found a Japanese Gal and wound up getting married. As marriages go, I incorporated some of her traditions; eating rice is one of them. All though there are many styles of rice, we switched between Japanese sticky rice and Thai Jasmine Rice.
As I was walking in Sam’s, I figured it was a good idea to talk about the cost per serving of rice, and the type of rice I found there. Depending on how you eat, the serving can change slightly. Down below I break down 3 types of rice, the size, the weight, and the cost.
- Keep in mind this is not premade, you would have to make it either in the truck or at home.

THAI JASMINE RICE.
White jasmine rice, the most common type of jasmine rice, contains the following nutrition per 100 gram (g) serving, or 3.57 (oz), a little over a half a cup (not cooked rice). It is also the one I use at home the most:
- Calories: 129
- Fat: 0.46 g
- Carbohydrates: 27.86 g
- Fiber: 0.7 g
- Sugar: 0 g
- Protein: 2.86 g
The specific nutrition facts of white rice vary slightly depending on the variety a person chooses to buy.
So, here is the breakdown of cost per serving by eating: THAI JASMINE RICE.
- Cost of 25 lbs. Bag $17.98 (Sam’s)
- one serving = half cup rice. (3 oz)
- 25lbs = 400 oz. = 133.33 servings
So, one serving costs = 0.13485 cents, U.S.,
Two meals per day = .27 cents.
Per Week = $1.89 dollars
I don’t know about you, but this worked for me. Again, I spent 8 yrs in Japan…so having it with every meal seemed to make cents….lol.
